SmartCommunities Conference 2021: proceedings

The Conference on Tuesday 13 April hosted speakers of international importance, entrepreneurs, researchers and public administrators: a day full of contributions on the Digital Transformation of Communities and innovative solutions in the areas of Smart and Collaborative Mobility, Government and Data Economy, physical and digital Security.
The day was opened by the President of the Cluster, Rodolfo Zich, who underlined the importance of dialogue and comparison between companies. public and private research and innovation institutions and components, and the role of National Clusters to aggregate and manage in a truly effective and concrete way those public-private partnerships that are necessary and essential to create territories, communities and cities that are authentic examples of social innovation.
Hazem Galal, PwC’s Cities and Local Government Global Leader, kicked off the conference with an inspirational speech on the cities of the future, starting with the main challenges communities are facing, underlining how we can all contribute to building vibrant communities economically, more accessible and resilient. Laura Morgagni, General Secretary of the Cluster, presented the update of the Italian Roadmap for SmartCommunities highlighting the three key dimensions of resilience – economic, environmental and social – and the key factors that allow us to respond to the effects of the pandemic: management of data; the diffusion of technologies and strengthening of digital skills; interdisciplinary decision-making strategies and intersectoral policies for the convergence of objectives, resources, results and impacts. Marc Charlet, NextMove General Manager, opened the Smart and Sustainable Mobility session describing the mobility of the future #TomorrowWillBeMobile: cleaner, more sustainable, safer, autonomous, connected, inclusive and shared.

MaaS, payment systems, public transport, home-school mobility, IoT platforms, traffic management, air quality, fleet management and car sharing, many themes presented in the innovation projects presented by Almaviva, Cliotech, Fondazione Bruno Kessler, LINKS Foundation, Park Smart, SIA, University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Vodafone.
On the topic of Smart Government and Data Economy, Marko Turpeinen, CEO of 1001 LAKES, talked about the experience of Helsinki SmarCity bringing the reflection on the relevance, advantages and impacts of the application of the data economy within a city and on how to deal with it. Many ideas in the presentations of the projects of Circuito IES, Municipality of Piacenza, Dedagroup, ENEA, Engineering, Latitudo40, Salesforce, SAS, Synapta, University of Florence on the management and use of data for sustainability, safety, health, communication to citizens.
The afternoon began with another exceptional keynote speaker, Sam Tatam, Ogilvy UK Global Consulting Partner on the key role of behavioral sciences in understanding a community and in defining communication strategies to promote the change needed to build intelligent communities and sustainable. Pietro Baratono, Head of the Infrastructure, Information and IT Systems Department at MIT, effectively illustrated the critical issues, opportunities and development scenarios in the field of physical and digital security.
Subsequently, the projects presented by Artys, Builti, Municipality of Turin, expert.ai, GD Test, IIT, Intellegit, SCAI Lab, University of Bari addressed the issue of safety in various fields and application contexts: the monitoring of infrastructures, information management, citizens’ perceptions, social distancing and health.
The round table on PNRR attended by Cesare Avenia, President of Confindustria Digitale, and Luca Bianchi, Director of SVIMEZ, led the reflection on the opportunities and priorities for the use of resources related to the National Plan for Recovery and Resilience, highlighting, in in particular, the unavoidable need for greater digitization of PA processes and widespread access to infrastructures and digital services.
The afternoon continued with a focus on European policies and funding opportunities for SmartCommunities presented by Andrea Halmos, policy officer of the Technologies for Smart Communities unit of DG Connect. Presentation: EU policy and funding opportunities for SCC
The day ended with the presentation by Barbara Pralio, Innovation Manager of the Cluster, on the next activities we are organizing to encourage developments projects and an increasing collaboration between companies, the world of research and public administrations.
